Mercenary Archer

I found a job freelance on conceptart.org for a fantasy game after emailing the person how posted it he asked me to draw a female archer described as

"mercenary- female humanoid that wears ranger like cloth stuff. Carries a single crossbow, moves fairly quickly, fairly agile, and shoots crossbow bolts very quickly. Maybe a hood in her clothing design"

Earlier design phase

Always have a few ideas before settling on a couple. I chose these two as examples for what they could look like, It helped that the description he gave me gave me a lot to work with.

1 Assassin style 

for the assassin, I tried to get a kind of ethereal look, traditional an elven look to the hooded cape adding in spiral patents stitched in to the coat. expensive looking as if she is good at what she dose, and get allot of money for it. quite clean and virtuous, the light blonde hair adds to this, but with a dramatic stance and a fierce snarl shows that she is still a cold blooded killer when it comes to defending herself and what she believes in.  

as I wasn't sure that the character was a hero or a Villon, so I tried to kind both of them sort of ambiguous, but I did bass this one on two Iconic game heroes. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Link (Zelda) also a bit Robin Hood. 

2 Bandit style

Thinking of "Ranger like" characters I thought of a person that lived in the wilderness, who has a gritty bloody life salvaging armor weapons and food from contracted kills. A



 woman who's very existence means that she survived by fighting every day of her life. an over ripped skirt which may have been a beautiful layered dress once, has now been reduced to tatters, metaphor for lose of innocence. 

Taking hints of design from Bethesda as in the bandits from Fallout3 and Skyrim  

After conferring with the client we agreed on the assassin suited his character more and after a a few suggestions and alterations she had brown coat and a neckerchief mask

Took a little inspiration from from Munch's Scream and the blind monster from Pam's Labyrinth. a creepy troll like creature.

NEWS AND NEW's

Hay all
Just been sorting everything out things should make a bit more clear. still a long way to go but will be updating everything more. News and new's is a spot for me to say whats going on and put the pics as and when I upload them, I have uploaded my animations form university: part 1 'In the shadow' and part 2 'Black tear' was hoping to make a full pilot episode one day, when I have the time and resources.

MEET ALISA

The man character in my story 'The black Tear' there has always been a real of gods, demons, spirits and  fairy lives along side us, like a parallel universe. when something crosses over like hell spawn monster, or a man seeking power in the dark arts, it is her duty as a 'warrior of the black tear' to stop them. born form a human mother and the king of fairies she was raised in the spirit realm and trained for this roll until her parents were killed by a invasion from demons, Alisa and her younger sister Reta fell from their world in to ours, separated from her sister she had to fend for herself and learn to live and holding onto the only thing she has left.the responsibility of the Black Tear. She is a deadly assassin trained in over 80 marshal arts, signature katana, an extensive knowledge of deadly spells and how to defeat any supernatural being, an excellent strategist in stealth and combat,  but although she is half human she finds it difficult to understand people and learn to live a normal life.

Pail Face

That beautiful woman that you were jealous of and ruined her life tried to take hers.given an experimental drug to try and save her life. woke her from the dead giving her not die and to become aware of spirits, but raising from the dead gave her an unquenchable thirst, a thirst for revenge,
She symptomatically went through her friends that destroyed her one by one slaughtering them brutally, then moving on to kill anyone that resembled them.

Believing her beauty is what killed her, she hides her face under a plain mask.
Becoming a modem folklore pail face,don't be sweet, and smile on you're face, then be a back stabber and be tow faced. or hope karma will find you before Pail Face.

 'hollow victory'

I tried to capture a great sense of loss in this picture, so the heroine in this as obviously survived by the skin of her teeth, armor/space suit has been broken upper arm has become detached revealing a bullet hole in her arm, the armour on her side had buckled due to a gunshot or as the result of an explosion along with the scrapes and singes on the rest of her. The face was difficult I really wanted to capture the emotion in her eyes. She is walking away from the exploding structure, not rescued beeing the aircraft, so she is escaping, as if she was sent to destroy it. The tear rolling down her cheek to show that she is aloun shoes that she was with someone or a group of which she is the soul survivor, and perhaps her lover died or sacrificed themselves for her or the mission.

POWER ARMOR :

drew this yesterday 6,7,14  going with a design for a suit for as I need to work on robotics, then it turned into a epic battle. One man vs an army of aliens before reinforcements arrive. a friend saw this and said it looks like a "Meca Gengis Khan". kind of Gears of War and Warhammer 40k.

Some kind of badass tank suite capable of deflecting fire and preform medical tasks like surgery, defibrillator, adrenalin shots ect, enhance fighting capability solders life expectancy. The helmet can function as a heads up display and shields the face when it is down, but this character has it up, ether because it is damaged of because he prefers to look them in the eye as he pummels their armor off with giant robotic fists.

To all cat owners,
you know what I'm talking about. your working on something then suddenly it becomes you're cat's favorite place to sit. so I had high hopes for this one, Cyber-Punk witch in Matrix sort of cat suit.(no irony intended.) then a few muddy pours later and I wasn't really in the mood to finish it.

I think that every one has found something creepy about the 'Wizard Of Oz' I just wanted to beat Tim Burton to it. also an in joke for Toto fans.

very old, like 10 years old,  for the same band dystopia Stimulus was just 'Dammed Angel' was trying to imagine a Rodan sculpture and go this. Just found this and thought I'd share it 

CHARACTERS AND EXSAMPLES

Unnamed Heroine 

kind of unfinished as I haven't drawn her right hand and the weapon need coloring, but that will be finished and uploaded soon, thinking along the lines of Manga, final fantasy, with my own comic realist style. Over-sized elaborate weapon,  J-pop fashion, bright colors, over the top hair, all must be taken in to consideration when doing a character similar to this. small details play a subtle part in making a character come to life, lacey frill clashed with hard armor and punky leather buckles suggests gentle feminine with a strong determination, and the ability to handle her self. The tiara shows that she has more importance that a warrior. The blade is unique to her as if she is the only one that can use it as in a prophecy could be attributed to her, and even the number of blades could bear some relevance.

Robots paradise

Went mental with a Biro one day. TRY IT! Just scribble across a page, long and not too close together. 

One thing we humans are good at is association, ever look at a cloud and see a familiar shape. scribble across the page make your own cloud, because in that moment of spontaneity you naturaly make the next line fit with another, untill you step back and look at it and then you start to see a picture. After that start drawing the detail of the picture you see

I drew this alien landscape with some kind of city in the distance, and in the foreground a robot monster on a cliff face.

This tip is handy if you have been starring at a blank page for a few minutes with no idea , Blank page = Black Mind Just something down, also gets you out of the mind set as in 'That line has to be right' Free up! Imagine this method as if you are tuning in to a radio signal the scribbles is the white noise(static) and the dealt becomes the music

 HI THERE  and welcome to my humble blog
I have spent most of my adult life studying, working low paid job and hard triads, but all my life I have been drawing. thinking up worlds and stories stretching my imagination and communicating that through my skill in art.

At school I was always known as the best artist in my class, and the most talented in sixth form. Later my drawing skills brought me in high demand for film projects, as a storyboard and concept artist in my degree in Film, Radio and Television at 'Christ Church University'.
As it is with most people at my age I found it so hard to figure out what I wanted in life, but I have recently come to the realization that the answer has always been staring me in the face. I want to be a concept artist.
